Secondment of Dr Turlough Downes to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS)

The National Centre for Plasma Science & Technology (NCPST) and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) have further strengthened their ties through the secondment of Dr Turlough Downes, a PI of the NCPST, to the Institute for 80% of his time for a total of 2.5 yrs starting in April, 2008. Dr Downes will work on the prestigious BlueGene facilities recently launched by the Tánaiste, Mary Hanafin, by DIAS and the Irish Centre for High End Computing. He will use the supercomputers to study turbulence in molecular clouds in our galaxy. This turbulence plays a significant role in how stars such as our own sun form. Dr Downes will be using a world-leading computer code using novel algorithms developed by him and Dr Stephen O'Sullivan (DCU/NCPST).
