16th European Fusion Physics Workshop December 1st – 3rd December 2008
Garryvoe Hotel, Ballycotton Bay, Castlemartyr, Cork, Ireland
Leading fusion physicists from all over Europe travelled to East Cork in the first week of December. They were gathering for the European Fusion Physics Workshop, which took place between the 1st and the 3rd of December at the Garryvoe Hotel on the shores of Ballycotten Bay. The meeting was hosted by the Irish Fusion Association, based at Dublin City University and University College Cork. The international fusion physics community is collaborating to develop the Iter experiment, at a cost of some twenty billion euro. Iter aims to demonstrate large-scale energy production without the use of fossil fuels. This technology could make a crucial contribution to the world's energy supply during the 21st century. The design of the Iter experiment is at a critical stage, and it was against this background that three days of close and intensive debate took place at the Garryvoe Hotel. The leader of the European fusion physics programme, Dr Jerome Pamela, who was at the meeting, said that he was extremely impressed by the quality of the contributions and the constructive discussions that took place. There was general agreement that substantial progress had been made, and many important issues clarified as the Iter design moves into its final stage.
